June 2012
Welcome to the new Monthly Hyde Newsletter. Every month we will be keeping you all up to date with new products, designs and stories from around the world. If you have been involved in any interesting projects then please email them through to and they can be included in these monthly updates. In this way you can learn from what other members of the network are doing, and help distributors in other countries break into new or similar markets.
Making an impact in New York
Hyde’s Union Jack spinnakers made a stunning display as the Clipper Round the World Race
fleet completed a parade of sail past New York during the recent race stopover. As part of the
Make it GREAT Britain Campaign, ‘Welcome to Yorkshire’ and ‘Edinburgh Inspiring Capital’ were flying special Union Jack spinnakers.
On consecutive weekends during May, teams from the Hyde Sails spinnaker and printing departments could be found stencilling and hand-painting the art work on the two spinnakers. The result, after many hours of hard work, was the transformation of a blank canvas into a colourful and patriotic flying billboard that the teams taking part in the Clipper Race were proud to hoist. Optimist sails in Italy
Hyde’s Italian distributor has made a great impact on the Optimist fleet in Italy and Hyde’s Optimist sails will be heading to this year’s world championships after one of the sailors using Hyde’s finished second at the Italian trails.
The tale behind Hyde’s sails at the J/80 worlds
After a spectacular world championship in Dartmouth, we asked sixth-placed Rob Larke about
his campaign, the sails and how the event unfolded for him…
How did you prepare for the event?
“About 18 months of work went into the boat and the event. We started with getting the keel all faired, then changed the rig set and then this led to the sails with lots of test sailing over the winter, lots of pictures and talking to Mike Lennon [Hyde’s Design Director]. We finalised the designs at Easter and the new designs went into production ready for the worlds.” Read the full interview here.
Scottish Series success
There were plenty of Hyde-powered boats racing at this year’s Brewin Dolphin Scottish Series, and the event ended with three of them topping their respective classes.
In Class 1 IRC, Playing FTSE (a Beneteau 47.7), used its Hyde kite all regatta and took the overall
class win by two points. In CYCA Class 5, the Sigma 400 Sunrise was racing with a full inventory of
Hyde Xtech sails, won on countback, and in CYCA Class 7 the Trapper 28 Redwing, also racing with a full inventory of Hyde’s, had another tight victory and won by a single point.
Hyde has a comprehensive dealer network in Scotland, and benefits from the network of distributors which work very closely together and are building a great presence for the brand in their area. Read the full story here.
A-Raters are an impressive sight on the Thames
Hyde has supplied sails to a number of the stunning highmasted A-Raters, which race primarily on the River Thames, with some great results so far this season… In the Thames Champion Cup and Dunn cup, Atlantis (No15) finished second overall using a new Hyde jib. Meanwhile, Jonathan Smith’s Scamp (No12) finished fourth overall with a complete new Suit of Hyde sails. Scamp was also second in the Thames A Rater Queens Cup and first in the Thames A Rater Vintage Trophy. Scamp celebrates her 107th birthday this year, and owner Jonathan Smith has owned the boat for 30 years. He explains: “Nothing really compares to the precision which is required when stream, wind, team
and boat all have to come together on the Thames.”. Read more here.

‘We were impressed with the speediness of the Cebu team to manufacture and deliver a
complete new sail. We were also impressed by the overall performance and professional attitude
of every Hyde Sails employee that we dealt with in Cebu.’
‘Can you please thank and congratulate everybody involved in the successful delivery of my set of
Fusion 40 Sails.’
‘Thank you very much for coming to Bedford to talk to us about Hyde Sails, and the fine arts of sail
triming. The talk was excellent and very informative, enjoyed by all attendees.’
‘We used the new kite today… Superb! It’s a powerful shape and sits nicely to windward. Running
deep in 10 - 14 knots we followed close behind the A35 all the way to the leeward mark. They just
couldn’t pull away! Stayed with them all the way round the track, so we’ve got the frostbite series
in the bag with a race to spare. 1,1,1,2,1. Well happy! Huge thanks to all at Hyde’s.’
