Last weekend the UK 2012 BLSA Blokart Open took place on the beautiful Pembrey Beach in Pembrey Country Park, with kind permission of the local council & local Sailing club the CLSC. It was the second highest attended event with a fleet of 60 even with such a mixed weather forecast. Age range of the entrants was spread between 9 and 70 and the racing was in 4 weight categories in 2 classes of production and performance.
The sailing on Saturday was slow to start after some transponder timing system issues, however we managed 7 races in good weather with wind speed peaking at 15 knots over the 1.5 mile course.
On Sunday sailing was a little more brisk with gusts up to 25-30 knots, and conditions became more difficult through the afternoon and a decision was made at 3.30 to abandon racing early due to the decreasing visibility on some of the outward markers and the cold driving rain. Many of the younger competitors had retired for safety reasons but the heavier weight sailors in the fleet were disappointed as they were enjoying a great afternoon.
Prize giving at 4.45 was transferred at last minute to the Café in the park as it was too miserable to stand in the field. Many thanks to the owners for agreeing to this.
I'd like to say a big thanks to all the sailors for attending and making it a memorable weekend, the marshals and assistants, a big thanks to Pat Letters our Race officer and the rest of the committee and a really big thank to the 2012 Sponsors, if you want to find more about the sport just visit the BLSA website or email
