RYA Dinghy & Watersports Show 2025

YachtsandYachting.com Forum Open at Broxbourne Sailing Club - Day 1

by Mark Jardine 13 Oct 2012 22:55 BST 13-14 October 2012

Twenty-four boats arrived at Broxbourne Sailing Club for the first ever YachtsandYachting.com Forum Open Meeting on Saturday morning. For many this was 'putting a face to a name' after years of banter on the forum.

A range of boats took to the water, from MiniSail to Punk and RS400 to Icon and a range in between including Finns, D-One's, Lasers and a 2000.

Three races took place first with Dan Holman's Punk dominating in the light and shifty winds. The course made full use of the lake and provided legs for every point of sail - perfect for the diverse fleet.

Much amusement was caused when the YachtsandYachting.com editor became the windward mark after a far too close rounding, "With the D-One's wing hiding the mark I said with much embarrassment that everyone should round me!"

The fleet then switched boats for the final race of the day, giving everyone a chance to try something they hadn't sailed before. The change made remarkably little difference in the results - the same sailors ended up at the front end of the fleet... weird that! The experiment even resulted in 'pondmonkey' saying he loved the Finn! Something that he thought he'd never thought he'd say.

Post racing saw everyone convene in the Broxbourne clubhouse for an excellent supper and much banter ranging from chat on beer, pasties, boats, funnels and things that cannot be published!
