Marmaris is not only one of Turkey's tourist hotspots but also a great centre for sailing, hosting an International Race Week every year. Teams and boats have already been split into 8 groups, and the many sailors gathered in this popular port town on the Mediterranean coast for the 23rd edition of this exciting event, were eager to get started with the – always demanding – inshore races scheduled for today.
Though we're nearing November, the weather remains warm here in Turkey – but by the end of this first day, gusty winds posed great challenges to the participating sailors, and a storm even broke out toward the end of today's races. If nothing else, this confirms the levels of skill and preparation necessary for sailing in competitive events like this one.
Many teams enjoyed great performances in the course of a very full first day today – among the best teams was 'Courrier de Coeur' in IRC 1, while in IRC 2 the day belonged to 'Sail & Sail'. In the two further groups in the IRC category, Iscorpit and Hadar finished first. As for the four IRC Charter groups, it was 'Laloba', 'Thetis', 'Ricarda' and 'Attila 2' that excelled and hope to be able to repeat these top performances tomorrow.
