International Moth European Championship in Sicily - Day 3

by Domenico Boffi 2 May 2013 07:17 BST 28 April - 4 May 2013

Britannia rule the waves

The British crews flexed their muscles today and have placed 4 athletes in the top 5 positions, followed by the Swiss in terms of speed and regularity. The first Italian sailor is Stefano Rizzi in eleventh. Two races were held with one cancelled in shifty winds.

Finally the racing started in the morning with a southerly wind of 12-14 knots, even though during the first leg this swung 90° to the west and had lulls on both sides of the race course.

The second race saw wind shifts and changes in intensity, with the wind falling to nothing during the third lap and the Race Officer was forced to cancel the race.

In the afternoon another race started and in a similar manner to the morning, although less conspicuous, the wind was really unstable. The wind stabilised at least for the third lap and the race was completed.

Marsala is showing us its most difficult side, the one of typical southerly winds of the changing season. On Thursday the Mistral is expected which should stabilise the climate and the mood of competitors and the race team.
