European Springtime Yngling Championships at Fraglia Vela Riva Overall

by Elena Giolai 6 May 2013 17:22 BST 1-4 May 2013

An exciting final

Jan Deen, Sander Oost and Steven Van der Zee of The Netherlands have won European Yngling Springtime Championships which took place recently at Fraglia Vela Riva, Riva del Garda. It was a marvellous championship set off by a final full of sunshine and winds of 14 – 18 knots.

Thirty teams took part from The Netherlands, Austria, Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland, Germany and Slovenia and everyone was extremely pleased with the competition and their stay on Lake Garda, Trentino an area which offers innumerable activities within a small radius.

All 8 races were completed with the positions on the podium having been decided on the third and penultimate day with races 5, 6 and 7 running with medium to strong winds from the south.

The final race confirmed the standings of the day before with Jan Deen and Co. almost losing by a breath as compatriots Gietema, Kuiters and Diederik reached the top with the same amount of points. They took the silver medal which was so nearly a gold. Last year's winner Jamin Maarten finished in third place, ten points behind the leaders and ten points ahead of Kentgens, De Leeuw and Kamstra who took 4th place after holding on to the lead on the first two days. They were penalized in the final race and had a false start in the second last race.

There was great satisfaction all round this year for the European Yngling Springtime Championships which continue to grow year after year. This year we welcomed the participation of Denmark and Sweden.
