Ullswater Yacht Club is encouraging more people to get out on the water by holding an Open Day on Saturday, June 8.

The friendly club, which caters for all, young to old, beginners to experts, leisure sailors and racers, is on the North-east edge of Ullswater, and will be open to visitors from 11am to 3pm.

There will be a host of activities on offer as people are encouraged to try sailing in either dinghies or cruisers, accompanied by one of the club's experienced sailors or instructors.

The club will supply everything to prepare you to take to the water. All you need if you fancy a go is a change of clothes, a towel, and a pair of trainers that you don't mind getting wet. A windproof jacket is also a good idea.

Refreshments will be available in the clubhouse which enjoys spectacular views across the lake and members will be on hand to answer your questions about what it is like to be a member of the best yacht club there is.

The Open Day will also see the launch of the new Ullswater Sailing School.

Visitors will be able to book one of the newly-available courses to learn how to sail. There is everything from a two hour taster session to a five-day Royal Yachting Association course. A range of boats will be available to suit all ages from eight years upwards.

The new School also offers powerboat experiences and training.

Project Leader for the School, Peter Lewis is particularly keen to link up with schools and clubs by offering sailing courses for young people either as a series over a few weeks or as an adventure week.

There is a special bonus for those booking a course - a 50% discount on the entry fee to join the club.

The official opening will take place at 2pm by John Spivey, Commodore of UYC.

Ben Tye, Manager of UYC said: "What could be better than learning to sail in one of the UK's most beautiful locations? UYC, which was voted Sailing Club of the Year, has excellent clubhouse facilities and has a fleet of 16 training boats to suit all levels of experience and ages."

And for those who don't want to go on the water there will be plenty to see and do. Demonstrations, children's activities and displays will be on offer, all free of charge.

John Spivey, Commodore of UYC said: "Whether you want to return to the sport or simply try something new with the family, we are delighted to welcome people of all ages and abilities to come along to our club. We want people to get out on the water and discover a new pastime."

All are welcome to come along to the special Open Day. No booking is necessary – just turn up. For more details about the Open Day, contact Club Manager Ben Tye on 01768 486333 or visit www.ullswateryachtclub.org

To find UYC, take the Howtown Road from Pooley Bridge and the club is about two miles on the right.

A seriously windy weekend for the 17 RS200s in the massive fleet at Ullswater After collecting my cap from the grounds of Ullswater Yacht Club I knew it might be a bit windy. 22 knots gusting 30 was the forecast, with a bit of luck it might be wrong but too late for me to hide this information from my crew.
