Supernova Open at Scammonden Water Sailing Club

Glorious sun shone down on 15 sailors when Scammonden Water Sailing Club hosted the Supernova Open on Sunday, July 14.

The six Scammonden sailors and 9 travellers were in for a fine race with a south westerly wind making for a great opportunity to beat up Scammonden Water.

A change to usual club start line was introduced to allow for the beat, with the start line between mark 8 and the committee boat.

Competition got hotter with a minute to go, when one visitor crossed the line and collided with two boats as he turned back, while a Scammonden club member had the perfect start, albeit five seconds too early and he too had to turn back when he crossed the line.

Race 1 went to Mike Gibson, of Bartley Sailing Club, with Tony Critchley, of Bolton Sailing Club in second place, and Paul Earnshaw, of Haversham Sailing Club, in third place.

Race 2 saw the wind pick up and the course was shortened from eight to seven marks, but a brief drop in wind saw the two lead boats get stuck, allowing for Earnshaw to take the lead in the race he went on to win, with Steve Harley, of Bartley SC, second and Tony Critchley in third place.

Race 3 saw some close sailing, and despite the mid-fleet sticking together the clear winner of race 3 and overall was Mike Gibson.

Supernova Nationals at Plas Heli overall
Something for everyone and this championship must go down in history On the long weekend of 28, 29 and 30 June the Supernova fleet descended to Pwllheli for the Hartley Boats Nationals at Plas Heli.
