Schull Harbour Sailing Club has re-introduced junior sailing to the club with 5 new RS Feva dinghies. The junior members of the club checked out the boats on the water yesterday with instructor Pierce O'Flynn.
"We are delighted to welcome this new fleet to the junior sailing program," said Alan Dwyer. "The Fevas will provide an excellent training platform for all levels of youth sailing at the club."
Junior sailing was first introduced in the early 80s by some of the current senior members of Schull Harbour Sailing Club, with dinghy racing on Saturday mornings. The highlight of the season was an annual team race against Crookhaven Sailing Club. Many of these early junior sailors subsequently qualified as ISA instructors. Some also instructed overseas in various locations including San Francisco, Vancouver and Hawaii. Several of the juniors who cut their sailing teeth in Schull went on to represent Ireland at Junior World and European Championships.
