Dart 18 National Championships at Netley Sailing Club

by Jeff Morgan 21 Aug 2013 13:34 BST 16-18 August 2013

The Dart 18 continues its renaissance attracting new and old sailors back to the fleet for some high quality one design catamaran racing. The 37th national championships proved no exception with seventy-three boats including some from Europe attending the fantastic Netley sailing club who provided a superb venue for excellent close racing and the world famous Dart apres-sail.

Set within quiet corner of Victoria Country Park near Southampton, a portion set aside for boats and parking, many competitors chose to camp in the club grounds. Netley Sailing club provided a safe family space for competitors and non sailing guests to enjoy the four day event. They even managed to summon up the evening monsoon, giving an impressive even more authentic feel for the Bollywood themed night and the tropical evening. The wind and rain only added to the enjoyment of those who partied late in to the night.

Shoreside support provided by the Windsport International team repaired most of the damaged boats as they came ashore, ensuring that many who would have, didn't miss out on the excellent racing in the Hill Head area of the Solent.

The Dart 18 remains a popular two person racing catamaran staying strictly to its one design heritage it provides excellent affordable competitive sailing at every end of the fleet. At the sharp end a closely fought battle went down to the final race in the challenging series of seven races, the final victor David Lloyd of Stokes Bay beating the recently crowned world champion Dan Norman by one point to take the much coveted national champion crown. Lloyd added to his recent Belgian and Dutch Championship victories.

Bournemouth Digital Poole Week 2024 overall
Studies in concentration A lot happened on the final day of Poole Week 2024. The wind was in one of its light and fickle moods, the tide was ebbing for the first starts, and the harbour was busy with traffic that had been mercifully light earlier in the week. Posted on 31 Aug 2024

The wind returns It might be in the realms of fantasy to imagine that what one writes in the report of one day's racing in a regatta could conceivably have a bearing on what the weather gods dish up the next day. Posted on 30 Aug 2024
Bournemouth Digital Poole Week 2024 Day 4
Fickle winds and fluctuating fortunes Wednesday was to have been a day of round-the-harbour courses for most of the fleets racing in Poole Week. The Dolphins and Cornish Shrimpers tend to sail round-the-harbour courses anyway - none of this triangle/sausage business for them. Posted on 29 Aug 2024

Blow the wind Southerly (sometimes with a bit of East in it too) Poole Harbour was very much a harbour of two halves on the Tuesday of Poole Week. In the top triangle, sailing area for the Flying Fifteens and ILCAs (Lasers in old money), the wind started in the south and pretty well stayed there. Posted on 28 Aug 2024

A windy welcome to the week Has anyone noticed that 2024 has been rather breezy? Last year, some regattas and championships were struggling with lack of wind. That hasn't been a problem on the whole this year. Posted on 26 Aug 2024
