No wind – no race – no way!
The depression over southern England spread down to the RLymYC forecourt before the second race of the Monday Night Dinghy Series. The light winds and strong flood tide reluctantly made the abandonment of most classes in evitable. Four Oppies were towed down the river to find some wind, which they duly did and Jasmin Summers won, followed by Euan Etheridge.
Race officer Ado Jardine decided the fast handicap fleet might be light and slippery enough to race, so he set a course out to the southwest to Scott Bailey and back. Dodgem car tactics at the start were followed by ghosting down the river to catch the shifts.
Approaching the river line the race looked likely to be abandoned but a wind line on the water was spotted by the RIB coordinator on the way to the leeward mark and the race was allowed to continue.
Several people misjudged the tide and were carried the wrong side of the turning mark, but almost everyone got round eventually. Rob and Jan Martin in the RS400 had judged the tide correctly and led the fleet for a 'fast' spinnaker run back up to the Club finish and first place on handicap.
