5-8 June 2014
Welcome back to Singapore and the National Sailing Center. After an exciting opening day of the National Championships all the competitors were tuning their boats for another demanding schedule of racing. Sailing is a sport that can have quick changes to the environment so crews have to align their boats, their techniques and their strategy to the conditions.
But the weather for day 2 again looked tricky. The sky filled with grey clouds and a suspicion of a new storm was in the air. The race committee managed to get one race in for all classes, but as they set up for the second, light winds with big shifts set in, followed by dark clouds rolling over the race area with stronger winds and gusts. All good fun for the competitors flying along at speed, but when thunder rumbled from above, it was time to get them back to the safety of shore.
The storm materialized with torrential rain to wash down the national sailing center. The sailors were on standby for instructions from the race committee, but this could only happen after the storm finished. Time to chat, and to chill out! Finally the race committee decide to abandon for the day as there was no sign of the storm abating.
Abandoning is always a little disappointing. That's sailing though. Part of the game. We learn humility in the face of Mother Nature. No bad thing.
Tomorrow the omens, well, the forecasts, are good, so we'll be back to the action in our next report. Do stay tuned!
