Welcome back to Singapore for the penultimate day of National Championships. Today the weather looked perfect for sailing with clear skies above the National Sailing Center. So all the sailors prepared for an excited full day of racing.
In race area A the sailors were eager to return to action. The starting signal found the boats jostling for the best position to fly up the course. In the Laser Radials, Alistair Young maintained pole position, while in the Laser 4.7 fleet Bernie Chin is top of the leaderboard.
In race area B you could see how sailing offers a great variety of boats, sails and types of racing. Here Singapore's Match Racing Cup was taking place with the teams clashing in fierce duels against each other in SB20s. Match racing is a one-on-one duel of strategy and tactics and the objective is simple – to be the first boat cross the finish line.
Back to the fleet racing format and race area A where the close battle for the 420 title was full on. Kimberly Lim & Savannah Siew crossed their swords with Yukie Yokoyama & Samantha Neubronner as they made the best of the light breeze in the first race to take the first spots leaving Loh Yi and Jonathan Yeo behind. But Loh and especially Jonathan never give up. Jonathan had a terrible cycling accident in 2011 causing a severe trauma to his spine. Although he was told he might never sail again, Yeo defied the doctors and got himself into shape through sheer grit and willpower. It's a good story, and he's made a welcome return to sailing. So far Loh & Jonathan have the overall lead but they can't relax with two top crews so close behind them.
Tomorrow the final day kicks off with the medal races as the last act before the announcement of 2014 Champions! Don't miss it!
