Singapore National Sailing Championships 2014 - Overall

by Icarus Sailing Media 10 Jun 2014 07:17 BST 5-8 June 2014

Welcome back to sunny Singapore for the final day of the National Championships here. Suspense was in the air as the title holders for 2014 would be decided out on the cut and thrust of the race track with podium glory in the minds of the contenders.

The medal races opened with a big fight in the 420s. Kimberly Lim and Savannah Siew were the indisputable winners of the medal race executing perfect strategy. But this bullet wasn't enough to secure first overall as Loh Yi and Jonathan Yeo managed to keep consistent and score well enough to take first overall. Yukie Yokoyama and Samantha Neubronner claimed third. Now all of them turn their focus to the international circuit looking to continue Singapore's strong run of winning world titles.

In the Laser Standard, Mark Wong was unstoppable as he managed to finish the Championship undefeated. All bullets – an amazing performance. In the Laser Radials, Alistair Young couldn't maintain his overall lead going into the final. His 7th in the medal race allowed Conor NIcholas to win overall with a bullet. As Alistair and Conor are both from Australia the National Champion is Ryan Lo. The Laser 4.7 fleet entertained spectators with close battles, and Bernie Chin was the winner of the day. His second place in the medal race allowed him to overtake Mathew Scott in this fine duel that lasted throughout the championship.

In the RS:X fleet the windsurfers had to pump their sails looking for better speed. Leonard Ong was the master of this technique and he easily claimed the title. In the Bic Techno Mildred Phang took the bullet in the medal race but the overall victory went to Izazz Mohammad.

With the medal races wrapped up, Singapore's Match Racing Cup was still to be decided, with the battles and drama escalating through the semis and finals. After great duels the team of Justin Liu ruled the waves to claim the gold. Singapore's National Championships ended with a warm closing ceremony where the Champions took their prizes to generous applause. All the sailors enjoyed this well organised event and they'll no doubt take good memories with them until, let's hope, the next one in 2015! See you next year!
