Small is best again in JPMorgan Round the Island Race 2005

SMALL IS BEST AGAIN IN THE JPMORGAN ASSET MANAGEMENT ROUND THE ISLAND RACE 2005

The quarter tonner "Purple Haze", owned by Tony Dodd, carried off the Gold Roman Bowl, top trophy in the JPMorgan Asset Management Round the Island Race, which took place on 18th June 2005.

1978-built "Purple Haze" was designed by the renowned David Thomas as the prototype for the Bolero class. She is a 25 foot wooden boat which deserves and indeed demands loving care and attention. Tony Dodd has owned the boat for three years, during which time he has carried out an extensive refit, including new veneers over the entire hull. The boat had many prior successes with her previous owner, John Dudley, former Commodore of the Island Sailing Club and organisers of the race.

Tony is a member of Warsash Sailing Club in Hampshire. The crew included Tim Rees, Hamble boatbuilders Jim and George Webb who helped Tony bring the boat back to new, with 19-year-old James, son of the current Warsash SC Commodore Derek Morland, on the foredeck.

Tim, who was mainsheet trimmer and in charge of tactics, commented on their success in the race: "There was an initial postponement of one hour which benefited the smaller boats as we got less foul tide at the back of the island. Our success may have come on the beat to St Catherine's when we went inshore and got a better breeze. Lots of boats went quite far off. The Gold Roman Bowl comes as a complete surprise. We thought we might be ahead in our class but didn't realise we were in a winning race."

Peter Dickson, Commodore of the Island Sailing Club said: "That Tony and 'Purple Haze' should win the Gold Roman Bowl exemplifies the unique nature of the event. We had 1,692 boats entered in the race and they can all compete on a level playing field. Tony and his crew were up against the best professional and international sailors."

For Tony Dodd, winning the Gold Roman Bowl was the absolute icing on the cake: "We were delighted to win the newly resurrected Quarter Ton Cup earlier in the week. We never imagined we'd do so well in the JPMorgan Asset Management Round the Island Race too."

The 69th JPMorgan Asset Management Round the Island Race takes place on Saturday 3rd June 2006.
