A dash down tide
The north easterly wind and ebb tide gave a number of sailors the opportunity to shake out their spinnakers earlier than usual on a Monday evening race. The penultimate race in the RLymYC's Early series produced the best wind so far, although the gusts caught a number of people out with several capsizes and a few mud baths. Race Officer Stuart Jardine sent the two fast dinghy fleets to the east of the river and the Scows and Class 3 to the west. The three RS400's had a close race in Class 1 with just over a minute separating them at the finish: Andy Ash-Vie took line honours, although the Rob and Jan Martin are ahead on points overall. Peter Blick and Ali Husband in the RS Vision won Class 2 by 4 seconds from Richard Russell and Sylvia Weger, the latter maintaining their overall first position.
The usual faces led the Scow charge down river from a running start to the turning mark and then onto a run out to a laid mark out in the Solent. Onto the beat into the tide and the order started to change. For a time the leaders were Barry and Carol Dunning in Snowgoose and Eric Williams in Anna with Capricio, sailed by Catherine Maguire and Bethany Putt and Nutshell sailed by Mike and Ros Urwin in hot pursuit. On the second round Capricio moved into the lead with Anna second, Snowgoose lay third and Nutshell fourth. With one race to go in the Early series, Capricio holds a commanding lead of 7 points over Rory Paton's Wizard.
Jasmin Summers was first home in the Optimist fleet and leads overall with five first places. Alex Paton is only 4 points behind.
Next Monday's end of early series race will be followed by a BBQ and prizegiving.
