HRH The Princess Royal joined UKSA, the Official Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week Charity, on the water racing against her husband Vice Admiral, Sir Timothy Laurence on Tuesday.
HRH The Princess Royal is UKSA's Patron and was on board with a selection of UKSA's Young Ambassadors who have completed the UKSA Change Direction program.
Brendan Kearley, 26, from Ryde Isle of Wight, a UKSA young ambassador, said: "HRH The Princess Royal helmed us to victory against her husband and it was a great day. I spoke with the Princess. We mainly talked about sailing, her experiences of sailing and mine. I was able to get involved in everything on board the yacht. I am a young ambassador for UKSA and proud to be involved in this fantastic charity. Over the last couple of years, UKSA have helped me greatly and I have achieved more qualifications through UKSA in the past couple of years than I did through my entire time at school."
Richard Thornton, UKSA Chief Executive, said afterwards: "We had a fabulous day with our Patron. We were quite competitive while racing and Her Royal Highness helmed us across the finish and brought the boat in. At UKSA, we are doing an incredible amount during Cowes Week but having a Royal guest makes a significant difference. We were absolutely delighted to welcome the Princess Royal on board, and she was pleased to be back here at the end of the day waiting for her husband!"
About UKSA
Youth charity UKSA offers transformational opportunities to 9,000 young people a year through sailing and watersports. It provides adventurous on-the-water activities to schools and groups, offers essential life and work skills through a range of successful youth development programmes, and has a range of structured professional training courses leading to employment opportunities within the maritime industry.
This year UKSA was unveiled as the official charity of Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week – pledging to get all-comers involved in the regatta and use the monies raised to get local children afloat.
To get involved during the regatta, head to UKSA's marquee in Cowes Yacht Haven. From here you can go out on a keelboat for just £5 to view the racing, blow gutterboats down channels of water, climb the mast of the iconic Gipsy Moth IV and watch the Boss Up a Mast spectacle. Keep your eyes peeled for the UKSA yachts too as you never know who might be on board.
To find out more about UKSA's training courses go to www.uksa.org where you'll find something for everyone, from highly regarded entry level careers courses leading to work within the superyacht industry, to leisure courses, back to work engagement programmes and top-up qualifications for professional sailors.
