Tay Week at Tay Yacht Clubs Association

by Marjory Knowles 4 Jul 2005 08:44 BST 25 June - 1 July 2005

Tay Week this year saw more dinghies taking part than there had been for a few years and it was encouraging to see more local clubs being represented. The all classes Lawson Cup had to be resheduled from the Monday to the Friday evening due to lack of wind. Racing continued each evening in varying conditions which proved difficult for all concerned.

This year also saw some Keel races re-introduced and had good suppport with Dave McCreadie winning the Lightship race, in the Sonata. Competition was close in the three classes, especially in the twenty plus Dinghy 2 fleet where Forfar's Alastair Tannock in a Laser took the honours with Dick McBride / Gerry Smith, (R.Tay) who sailed well throughout the week to win the Squib Class.

Despite being a smaller class Dinghy 1 saw some exciting racing with Wormit's Calum Brebner / John Kurran in a Merlin Rocket winning after a difficult week due to gear problems.

The week certainly ended on a high note with ideal, sunny conditions for the Lawson Cup which saw the fleet all starting together. The westerly breeze gave excellent racing with the local Hurricane 5.9 , Hamish Ramsay / Stuart Buchanan, managing six laps which gave them first place.

Prizes were presented by Mrs Jean Elvidge including the Rossleigh Landrover Trophy for endurance being presented to Mathew Malcolm (R.Tay)
