Dramatic conditions for the opening day of the D-One Gold Cup. The 9 strong GBR contingent woke up to a sunny Alassio morning. Building breezes built throughout the morning with the beautiful backdrop of Alassio Bay.
There was some chopping and changing at the front of the high calibre international fleet, with 33 sailors from 9 different countries.
The wind built throughout the day so the race officer sensibly layed the course behind a big hill to ensure racing wouldn't be blown out. However this presented different challenges with the wind shifting through 60 degrees and varying from 3 to 25 knots causing many sudden capsizes and dramatic place changes
GBR's Nick Craig is leading the fleet overnight tucked just ahead of 3 pro sailors. He is tied with Peter Fiala CZE on 4 points. Uberto Visconti ITA finishes off the top 3 after just claiming the 49er Italian nationals. Jon Hammond sailed to an excellent 8th in race 1
A perfect 15 knots and 23 degrees is forecast for today's racing.
