On behalf of Yachting Australia and the Australian Sailing Team, we offer our condolences to the family of John Harrison, who passed away over the weekend.
John was the Australian Olympic Team Section Manager for Sailing at the 1992, 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games.
Australian Sailing Team Performance Director Peter Conde recalled, "He was an absolute gentleman and a great man".
"John's influence over Australian Sailing is massive, he was instrumental in bringing Victor Kovalenko to Australia and John and his wife Gayle-Anne remained great friends to Victor and his family. John was also a mentor to me when I took on this role as Performance Director and leading into the London Olympics", said Peter.
"He was a Past Commodore and life member of the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron for his great work in the sport. As an active sailor, John competed successfully in Finns and Etchells as well as ocean racing over his long sailing career", added Peter.
In 2000, John was acknowledged with Yachting Australia's Services to Yachting award in recognition of his ongoing commitment to sailing and the Australian Sailing Team.
All that knew John will remember him fondly.
