Fish & Co. Singapore Youth Sailing Championships 2015 - Day 1

by Icarus Sailing Media 19 Mar 2015 17:30 GMT 18-21 March 2015

A great opening day for the 373 athletes

Welcome to Singapore, the dynamic and constantly innovating city, and host of the annual Fish & Co. Youth Sailing Championships. Singapore's National Sailing Center was alive with activity today as racing kicked off in the 9 classes for the 373 youth sailors from 10 countries.

Asia's top sailors are vying for podium places and national glory, while for Singaporeans this highly anticipated event is also a qualifier for the South East Asian Games and ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships.

The 28th edition of the SEA Games will once again return to Singapore in June 2015, and athletes are eager to represent their country in this momentous year.

The target to win was clear on the faces of athletes across the 3 race courses. Sailors were focused on this critical day 1 performance – as it is crucial to make early gains in the quest to win.

On course A, the two-person 420 teams tested their skills in the international fleet. Malaysia's Muhamad Uzair & Naquib Eiman took the early series lead from 2 race wins, with Loh Jia Yi & Matthew Scott from Singapore just behind. Top placed girls team Yukie Yokoyama & Samantha Neubronner are close on points in 3rd. 3 days of racing to go, and we're just in the foothills of competition at the moment.

On course B, the Optimist sailors enjoyed close battles, with crowded mark roundings and many different race winners. The level of competition is impressively high and the youngsters are pulling out all their talent to be at the front. Performance of the day to talented Singaporean, Jodie Lai, who secured a consistent 1,4,3,10 scorecard to claim the lead in girls division after 4 races.

With Day 1 complete, time to enjoy the stunning city, re-charge batteries and plan race strategies for day 2! Join us for more action in our next report!
