Welcome to Istanbul. An exotic destination spanning two continents and one of the world's biggest port cities. Today the Turkcell Platinum Bosphorus Cup kicked off. Anticipation was high for a closely fought regatta, as day 1 unfolded with all teams on edge, and hankering for a spot at the front of the leader-board hierarchy.
The Turkcell Platinum Bosphorus Cup got underway with strong winds and "kicker" waves – setting the stage for some thrilling and spectacular racing action. Bosphorus is renowned as one of the world's top sailing destinations. Its combination of wind, strong current, waves and amazing scenery make it a perfect spot to play out every nuance of sailing skill and strategy if you want to excel.
The race track played host to a coastal race for the maxi yachts – in a stunning spectacle of power and form. Team SFS II, the Volvo 70 from France, showcased commitment, strength and confidence to brilliantly control the fleet and take their first race win. Turkey's Orient Express VI and Korza houndedSFS, but couldn't make the break in form to take the lead.
Over on the windward/leeward race track, close boat on boat racing guaranteed non-stop tension. Sailing is a demanding sport. Physical skill, mental toughness and numerous race course dynamics come into play. Wind strength, wind shifts, sail trim, current strength and direction, all impact boat speed. The weather influences are combined with the tactical "chess game", as teams optimize their position between the racing marks and their opponents.
Performance of the day goes to Arkas Flying Box, who scored 2, 1 to lead the pack. Renault Farr Away opened their assault with a race win, but struggled in race 2, finishing 10th. Consistent scores of 3,7 for the team on CFM, and two 4th places for Eker Yayik Ayran keeps them well in touch at the front.
Tomorrow's racing will be heart-stopping, as the fleet competes right in the heart of one of the busiest commercial shipping routes in the world. "Live" coverage of the Bosphorus Race set against the iconic Istanbul skyline will bring you all the action. Don't miss it!
