Bourne End Week 2015 at Upper Thames Sailing Club

by Debbie Kite 6 Jun 2015 15:25 BST 23-27 May 2015

Bourne End Week 2015 at Upper Thames SC was a great success with a superb 5 days of racing in plenty of wind and sunshine. Entries increased this year, with the Merlin fleet splitting into flights for the first time in recent years.

Generous sponsorship from Aberdeen Asset Management, Squire Furneaux Volvo Maidenhead, Creation Covers, Virtual Rigger chandlers and Andrew Milsom, combined with excellent catering and socialising to make this year's event one to remember.

The Merlin Rocket River Championships were won by Laurie Smart and Vanessa Pilon in Flipside MR1065 finishing first in every race despite the best efforts of competitive visiting crews and experienced club members. They won the Yeves Plate for the second year running.

The top places in the Thames A Raters National Championships were closely fought but Vagabond crewed by Ben Palmer, Miles Palmer and Kevin Pearson came out the clear winner with six firsts from eight races beating last year's winner Adventurer into second place. But Adventurer (Simon Blake, Jock Wishart and Jamie Stewart) countered by winning the Queen's Cup on the last day after swapping the lead with Vagabond throughout the race, to take the vintage trophy donated by Queen Victoria in 1893.

There was good class racing too for the Wayfarers, OK, N12s and handicap classes. Winners were:

  • Wayfarer Founder's Cup: Peter and Beth Brewer in Kimsar
  • N12 Average Shield: Cadets Alex Pausey and Matt Bowen-Rees in Cinzano
  • Fast handicap: Katy Meadowcroft in Bart, RS Aero
  • OK Thames Water Challenge: Garth Thompson in Not Fade Away
