Scottish Optimist Traveller at Nairn Sailing Club

by Gordon Cogan Sivarajan 5 Sep 2015 08:26 BST 29-30 August 2015

A massive thank you to Nairn Sailing Club for hosting the second event in the 2015-16 Scottish Optimist SailingFast Traveller Series on the 29-30 August 2015.

On Saturday the forecast was for the wind to be coming from the south-west. It was windy and it was a challenging day especially for the smaller sailors. We launched early off the beautiful Nairn beach so that we could get races in before the wind built too much. Matthew McLullich had an unlucky start by capsizing as soon as he launched, losing his lunch in the process. As the wind was coming over the water it was stable; the sailors at the front were very consistent – Harris Cartwright won both races, Calum Cook got two seconds and I got two thirds.

On the second day the conditions were similar. Everyone went out knowing that it would be a long and difficult day as we would need to do four races to make up for the one we didn't manage to do on the previous day. Calum started off well winning the first two races but Harris upped his game and won the next two to win the event. Calum Cook came second overall and I came third. Well done to Lucy Wilson for coming fifth as this was her first event after she broke her finger. Alastair Coombs and Connor Kennedy did particularly well in view of the fact they are lighter sailors.

It may have seemed a daunting event for the regatta fleet but in spite of this they managed to complete two races. Congratulations to Orri Robertson who came first, Finn Dixon who was second and Sophie Kennedy who was third.

Nairn Sailing Club made us all feel very welcome. Thank you to the Race Officer and their team for running a great event despite the windy conditions. The sun shone throughout the weekend and Nairn provided an amazing barbecue and food throughout the weekend. Thank you to all the sailors for coming and the parents for all their support. We'd love to come back soon.
