Saturday the 13th August heralded the first Scottish Multi-Skiff Championships, hosted by Prestwick Sailing Club. 20 boats turned up from throughout the UK; including a Cherub from London & two Musto Skiffs from Rutland.

Saturdays racing was held in classic Prestwick conditions with 15 to 22 knots from the South West whipping up swell & waves of up to 6ft.

Race 1 saw Richard Stenhouse in his Musto Skiff lead from start to finish, with Ian Renilson 2nd, and Martin Goodlad 3rd, also in Musto Skiffs. Ross McKerrecher’s RS800 was 4th, with John Wilson taking 5th in a 29er, an admirable performance for his first time helming a 29er. Gavin Homer’s Int.14 suffered a broken shroud early on and had to retire, luckily with the mast still intact, this ended Gavin’s push to take the overall Scottish Skiff Travellers Series.

In Race 2 several place changes occurred when first Richard Stenhouse & then Ian Renilson capsized to allow Martin Goodlad through to certain first place, but a monster pitch-pole in front of the committee boat allowed both Richard & Ian through to take 1st & 2nd, Martin recovered to take 3rd. Kit Stenhouse took 4th in a Musto Skiff, with Mark Haine 5th in his RS600. Ross McKerrcher’s RS800 had to retire with centreboard damage after a collision with a Basking Shark.

Ian Renilson lead Race 3 until the last downwind leg when a tangled spinnaker forced him high and allowed Richard Stenhouse down the inside track to take 1st place, finishing places were as Race 2.

Sunday’s racing was held in relatively benign conditions compared to Saturday, a westerly Force 1-2 with a slight sea left over made for challenging sailing. Gavin Homer’s repaired International 14 revelled in the conditions and won all three races, with Richard Stenhouse scoring two 2nd’s, and a 3rd, Ian Renilson 2nd & two 3rd’s, and Kit Stenhouse two 4th’s and a 6th. Conner & Johnny McGaughey’s sailed there 49er well to take a 4th 5th & 6th.

The final results went with the general form of Saturday’s racing with those mastering the conditions coming out on top, Richard Stenhouse 1st, Ian Renilson 2nd, Martin Goodlad 3rd, Kit Stenhouse 4th, Mark Haine 5th the top four all sailing Musto Skiff’s

The event was generously supported by the sponsors Trident-UK, Bosun’s Locker & South Ayrshire Sports Council.

Overall Results:

1st Richard Stenhouse 7 pts. (Musto Skiff)
2nd Ian Renilson 11pts. (Musto Skiff)
3rd Martin Goodlad 19pts. (Musto Skiff)
4th Kit Stenhouse 22pts. (Musto Skiff)
5th Mark Haine 29pts. (RS600)

A backdrop of curry, Tennent's lager and Mark Taylor's excellent quiz Those of you following the report from day two will recall I was rather underwhelmed by the forecast for racing on day three.
