A record sum has this week been donated to a local charity by Marconi Sailing Club based in Steeple. The club holds The East Coast Piers Race every year with 2015 attracting over 75 entrants.
Following the culmination of entrants fees and sponsorship Marconi have this week presented cheque for a mammoth £33,850 smashing last year's figure by a clear £22,000!
The Cirdan Trust based in Bradwell-On-Sea provide sailing experiences for under privileged children on one of their 3 yachts along the Anglian coastline. Representing the charity Leoni Back said The Cirdan Trust are "really grateful to Marconi Sailing Club and to East Coast Piers Race for the funds raised through the event."
The cheque was presented by Club Commodore Michaela Dowley and Race Chairman Clive Shenton. Ms Back advised that the money would go towards vital restoration work on Queen Galadriel, one of the charities yachts which was in the process of being re-decked. The presentation underlines a long standing partnership between Marconi and The Cirdan Trust which rely on donations such as this to help continue their important work.
This year the East Coast Piers Race was won by Simon Northrop and Sam Van Barker with the planning for the 2016 event already well underway.
