On Saturday the Sail 4 Cancer boat will leave Barmouth for the start of one of the oldest and most remarkable multi-sport endurance races in the world. At the helm will be round-the-world yachtswoman Dee Caffari with Hamble-based champion navigator Libby Greenhalgh to guide the boat.
The Sail 4 Cancer boat will be part of a fleet of 17 who will cover a distance of 227 sea miles in three or four days. The runners will do Snowdon, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis, the equivalent of three marathons in as many days and most likely at night.
The team will be raising funds for Sail 4 Cancer which is a charity Dee has supported for many years as a Patron. The charity has a growing waiting list of families who are in desperate need of a respite break after living with cancer for months and years
"The Three Peaks Yacht Race has come round really quickly. When we first talked about racing in the event it was ages away. Time has flown and now the reality is upon us and the enormity of the challenge that lies ahead has hit home. Still, a few days of hard work and discomfort that we will face is nothing compared to what those suffering with cancer and their loved ones face on a daily basis. We can really make a difference, by raising funds and awareness for the charity Sail 4 Cancer, to those who really are in need of respite care. I am excited by the challenge and we will be sharing each and every mile with you as we go." Dee Caffari MBE
