The D-One fleet enjoyed a fantastic European Championship at Camp Jestrabi, Lake Lipno in the Czech Republic. 11 Czech boats were joined by good numbers of Hungarian, Austrian and British boats to make a strong 25-boat fleet.
Congratulations to Tomai Balazs (HUN119) on the win, closely followed by Petr Fiala (CZE203) and Tamas Szamody (HUN10). The last day started with a tie-break for 2nd, 3rd and 4th, so commiserations to Humphrey Carter (GBR309) who just missed the podium.
Typical lake weather of force 1-6 and variable direction tested everyone to the full, and both event and race management proved to be amongst the best we have ever seen. Practice day was gorgeously hot, with a pleasant breeze leading many to explore the far corners of this huge and very scenic lake. Day 1 was screaming windy, shifty, wet and cold with plenty of capsizing. Day 2 sunny, light and even more variable, while Day 3 changed from dank drizzly postponement to a perfect sunny Force 2 in just a few minutes, giving us a cracking two-race finale.
For many this was a first trip to the Czech Republic, but it will certainly not be the last. Our hosts were generous and enthusiastic, the local scenery and town of www.lonelyplanet.com/czech-republic/bohemia/cesky-krumlov were spectacular, and Lipno is only 20 miles from Germany and Austria, and three hours from Prague.
In September the D-Ones will be in Lake Garda for the Gold Cup, and next year it looks likely that the fleet will also travel to Hungary to challenge our new champion on his home lake, confirming the fleet's willingness to travel to new and interesting venues as well as the wonderful locations in Italy where we have enjoyed so many fine championships.
