Y&HYT & NEYT Event at Scaling Dam Sailing Club

by Stephen Chilton 20 Jul 2016 15:03 BST 16 July 2016

The RYA NE final event of the Yorkshire and Humberside and North East Travellers Series held at Scaling Dam Sailing Club, supported by Trident, on Saturday 16th July.

We could not have asked for a nicer sunny day, it was brilliant. The wind started off westerly force five then steadily increased, as can be seen in the photos the water being whipped off the top of the waves. Some of the contestants were experienced and it is clearly shown in the way they were mastering the wind and waves, but some had only just achieved RYA level one, this however did not deter them as they put on what can only be said to be a good show. There were in all races lots of thrills and spills with some very dramatic capsizing. Masts were taking a toll as well, with a laser and topper being de-masted. Watching the small lads sailing the optimists was just marvellous, so much effort being exerted and skill shown.

Race 1 got underway, some very close racing. 1st was Innes Bamford, Huddersfield SC, 2nd Ben Russell and Luke Stewart, Kielder water SC, 3rd Harry Myers Derwent Reservoir SC.

Race 2 well was a bit late starting possibly the contestants felt they needed a longer rest because of the conditions, 1st was Harry Myers Derwent Reservoir SC, 2nd Ben Russell and Luke Stewart, Kielder water SC, 3rd Peter Owen Derwent Reservoir SC.

Race 3 the contestants had now thinned out a bit, the wind was now really strong, the rescue boats were very busy. I am going to list all that sailed in this race as words can only fail to express how brilliant these youngsters were.

1st Harry Myers, Derwent Reservoir SC, 2nd Peter Owen, Derwent Reservoir SC, Izzy Brining, Scaling Dam SC, 4th Innes Bamford, Huddersfield SC, 5th Patrick Beukenholdt, Scaling Dam SC, 6th Liam Boyce, Scaling Dam SC, 7th James Armstrong, Tees and Hartlepool YC, 8th Sophie Brining, Scaling Dam SC.
