The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron appointed new Commodore Steve Mair at last week's Annual General Meeting at the Squadron Clubrooms in Westhaven. Commodore Steve Mair has now taken over from (now Past) Commodore Andy Anderson, whose two year term at the helm of the most prestigious yacht club in New Zealand has come to its traditional end.
Commodore Steve Mair is one of the youngest Commodores in RNZYS history, but he already has a very firm place in the NZ Marine Industry as the Director of Manson Anchors and Manson Engineering.
Steve has come through the club ranks over the past 6 years including two year terms as Rear and Vice Commodore and he is now ready to step up to the Commodore role - "Having been sailing and around boats my entire life I thought it was an opportune time to give back to yachting. What better way of doing it than providing some of my time and being part of such a great club. I'm also lucky enough to have a career in an industry that I love in the Marine field with Manson Anchors and also with Manson Engineering. I'm looking forward to the challenge and the exciting times ahead"
Commodore Steve Mair also paid tribute and thankyou to Andy Anderson on the night "I would like to thank Andy Anderson for a fantastic term as Commodore and for all the great things he was able to achieve. He was an inspiration to us all and he still managed to find the time to be involved in all of the club racing and sailing on the water." Andy Anderson is now moving on to another very prestigious role as the President of the International Council of Yacht Clubs, he will take that role over officially at September's ICOYC Commodores Forum in Copenhagen.
There were also two more changes to the guard on Thursday night. Ian Cook now moves up into the Vice Commodores role. Vice Commodore Ian Cook is also very well known in the NZ Marine Industry, he is the owner of super yacht building company Yachting Developments, and also owns the very famous classic yacht Ranger, and the recently restored Innismara. Aaron Young was the newest addition to the Flag officers, he has moved up from Chairman of the House to Rear Commodore.
Commodore Steve Mair, Vice Commodore Ian Cook and Rear Commodore Aaron Young will hold their places for the next two years, before the RNZYS guard will historically change again.
