Cadet Nationals at Royal Torbay Yacht Club - Day 4

by Sue McKichan 30 Aug 2000 20:06 BST

Sunshine & Fair Winds for Penultimate Day of Marina Developments' sponsored Cadet National Championships

After a flat and windless day on Tuesday, all 124 youngsters sailing in the MDL Cadet Open Championships were relieved to wake up to blue skies and a bit of breeze on the penultimate day of racing.

With the A and B fleets racing together on one course, 94 boats heading for one start line Means a lot of jostling for positions at the windward end of the line. Today this led to general recalls for both races, with Sophie Harrison (Corinthian Otters) and Julia Cornah (West Kirby SC) both ending up being 'black flagged' (and therefore disqualified) in Race 7. Both had been well up the leaderboard but by the end of race 8 had unfortunately slipped several positions on the leaderboard.

The first race started on time in an easterly force 3 breeze. As the day progressed, the wind died away to a force 2 and an easterly swell started to roll into Torbay, making conditions on the committee boat less than comfortable for race officials.

Overall leader, Sam Carter from Waldringfield Sailing Club continued his winning run with two convincing wins over his nearest rivals. He looks to be in almost unassailable first place going into the final day with an overall points total of 9. Lying second overall is Toby Harris, and crew Chat Atkins from Corinthian Otters who sailed to a good 3rd place in the seventh race of the series. Matt Summers and Tom Hannington from Highcliffe Sailing Club are third overall in the A fleet, recording a second place in the 8th race.

Pippa Wilson and Charlie Hatfield from Royal Lymington Yacht Club continue to dominate the B fleet, sailing to first places in races 7 and 8. Simon Wheeler and Andrew Stone (Parkstone YC) retained their 2nd position overall and Gemma Green and Richard Lewis of Corinthian Otters climbed to third place overall by dint of their 6th and 2nd places in racing today.

In the novice C fleet, Peter Johnson & Joss Haslam lead overall, knocking overnight leader Poppy & Jasmine Husband into third place, while Jodie Green and Hugo Bull of Stone SC are second overall.

After the serious racing of the day, a Œfun¹ race was held for former cadet sailors, which was set to be just as competitive as the earlier races in the day.

Results on Wednesday 30th August 2000 after 8 races: (including two discards)
