Royal Corinthian One Design (RCOD) Magnum Series

The RCODs of the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club, Burnham on Crouch arranged for Edwin and Team Phoebe to set up four windward/leeward course on Saturday, back-to-back. The prospect of such hard work evidently impacted on the numbers who turned up as only four RCODs were on the line but it proved to be a battle between two families.

We had John v Justin Waples and Sue v David Shapiro who had been flown in from San Diego at no expenses and little expectation as the fourth owner of "Corsair". With a fair tide beat and foul tide run, and about 10 knots of breeze, the racing was very close and there were frequent changes of places.

The crew work steadily improved as there were three rounds per race so plenty of hoists and drops. The helms were exemplary in their patience as they waited, without swearing or imploring of god's intervention, for crews to get the spinnaker filling on a number of occasions. The only cry of the day was from John Waples who thought the "helm from San Diego" was being too aggressive in not giving "His Lordship", who was on port, sufficient time to actually gybe to get out of the way of Corsair on starboard. The red faced crew member (you know who you are) on Corsair was heard to comment that we only needed to give "his nibs" time once he actually condescended to gybe his yacht onto starboard but John's "PR" mode was on so he did not listen.

There were wins for Sue, Justin and John although Corsair was steadily improving with a 2nd and 3nd. In the end it was a tie for first between John and Justin Waples which John won on countback and so he won the magnum of red wine (hence the Magnum series with the wine donated by Waples Wines – it was not for a prize of an ice cream). Tied for second (or is it third?) was David and Sue Shapiro which David on Corsair won on countback. A true battle of the families. Now we need some of the hard working doctors on the other RCOD's to leave their patients alone (they will not notice, honest) to join in the next Magnum series.

Our thanks to Edwin and his crew for setting such good courses.
