Phantom, K1 and Streaker Open at Waveney & Oulton Broad Yacht Club

by Veronica Falat 16 Jun 2018 20:18 BST 9 June 2018

Waveney & Oulton Broad Y.C. in Suffolk hosted open meetings for Phantoms, K1s and Streakers on Saturday 9th June. Visitors came from as far afield as Kent, Essex and Rutland but in all three classes local sailors were dominant.

In the fleet of ten Phantoms, Ben Falat of the home club was pushed hard by Matthew House, who grew up sailing on Oulton Broad, but Ben won all four of his races. The breeze was tricky – a northerly battling with an easterly sea-breeze! – so the race officer made several course changes during the day but it was always a matter of working the shifts both upwind and down. Matthew took second place overall, with Chris Roberts third.

There were only four K1s with two visitors joining the two local boats. Local sailor Duncan Madin has been sailing a K1 for a couple of seasons now and doing extremely well in the club's handicap fleet. On Saturday he was in his usual fine form and won all his races, usually by a big margin although in the final race Gavin Johnson from Alton Water wasn't far behind. Gavin took second place overall and David Pritchett was third.

The seven Streakers had some very close racing. Alex Reindorp from Chipstead led for much of the first race but made some mistakes with the course allowing Veronica Falat, Ian Mansfield and Mark Langston to overtake him every so often. The deciding moment came late in the race when Alex and Ian both took a mark the wrong way, allowing Veronica and Mark to slip through and finish ahead. Veronica then went on to win the other three races too. Alex gained three second places and Mark took third.
