Ripon Sailing Club celebrated high summer with a packed programme of racing and
off the water socializing on 23 and 24 June.
Commodore Bernard Clark took on the role of Race Officer for the weekend, ably
assisted by Jamie Kerslake. The races were for two separate trophies; one for
the Junior members (16 and under at the start of the sailing club year) and the
other for 'everyone else'. The Junior fleet included Mirror, Topper, Tera and
Optimist dinghies and saw some tough competition on the line and around the
course. "Don't think you are putting your Topper there!" was just one of the
comments from a competitive start line!
The final results were decided on
countback with Chris Hampshire (Optimist) winning from Ellie Clark and Ella
Kerslake (Mirror). Tom Moss (Topper) was 3rd and Tom Bates (Tera) was 4th.
The main fleet ranged from a Phantom to a Byte with all manner of craft in
between. The light winds saw some testing conditions with experience proving
to be the deciding factor in the final results with the trophy eventually being
claimed by Richard Pryke (Solo), followed by Chris Wright (Streaker), Tony
Dallimore (Solo) and the double hander of James and Sue Ricketts (RS200) in
fourth.
Simon and Elliott Roskrow were winners of the Commodore's special award
for newcomers to the racing fleet.
Saturday night's entertainment took the form of a Hog Roast supper followed by
bingo. The cries of "another line! another line!" might have had a different
connotation in other company but Gail Jackson kept the balls rolling and the
members kept on 'dabbing', raising money in memory of Holly Monk, who
tragically passed away in November 2017. Holly was at the club just weeks
before her death and the money raised will go to the Andrew Simpson Sailing
Foundation as part of a wider fundraising effort in her memory.
