Three more races were successfully added to the scoreboard in Palma de Mallorca today at the third event of the Melges 40 Grand Prix circuit, held in conjunction with Copa del Rey Mapfre 2018 hosted by Real Club Nautico de Palma.
Moving up in the standings by leaps and bounds is Alessandro Rombelli's Stig (Francesco Bruni, tactician) gaining a substantial 6 point lead over the fleet.
Rombelli started the day in second overall, but his 2-1-1 scoreline demonstrates best that he has come to Palma to win.
"Today, we put away acknowledging all the things that put us behind yesterday. More and more, the very level competition in this fleet is obvious, and it becomes a question of the details," said Rombelli. "We do have a good advantage going into the final two days here in Palma, so we will work hard to limit the risks and try to preserve our lead."
The first race of the day (Race Four) was just the start of good things to come for Rombelli as he finished a close second to Andrea Lacorte's Vitamina-Cetilar (Alberto Bolzan, tactician).
For overnight leader Yukihiro Ishida and his Sikon team (Manu Weiller, tactician), it was a difficult day as they were unable to get the boat going, finishing up fourth overall.
In Races Five and Six, Rombelli and his team began to build their masterpiece performance by grabbing two consecutive bullets, ultimately putting him in charge of the Melges 40 Class at Copa del Rey Mapfre 2018.
Looking ahead to the third day of competition, two things remain obvious - that the fight for podium position is still valid, and in no way shape or form can anyone be counted out.
The Melges 40 Grand Prix circuit counts on the support of Helly Hansen, Garmin Marine, and Melges Europe.
Melges 40 Grand Prix has signed and adopts the code of ethics of the Charta Smeralda strongly promoting the values of One Ocean Foundation.
