Simon Gomez Ortiz of Colombia is the 2018 USSCA North American champion after a strong performance in this year's regatta. This year's regatta was sponsored by the Lake Bluff Yacht Club and sailed on Lake Michigan. The two-day regatta offered a variety of conditions from 12-15 knot winds and short chop to light air and flat seas.
Gomez Ortiz sailed well throughout the 8-race regatta beating Nicolas Marcos of Mexico by a score of 15 points to 28 points. Simon's dominance was demonstrated by first place scores in the first, fifth, seventh and eighth races. Rounding out the top three was Alejandra Valdez of Mexico.

The next order of business for the fleet is the USSCA Open NA's which begins on August 2nd.
Registration has topped 70 participants for this year's U.S. Sunfish Class Association North American Championship Regatta sponsored by the Lake Bluff Yacht Club. The regatta runs from August 1st until August 4th, 2018 on Lake Michigan east of the Waukegan, Illinois public beach. Competition runs from August 2nd through August 4th.
Current registration includes competitors from 9 different countries and 16 US states. Among the competitors are previous world and national champions, past Olympians and a contingent of South and Central American competitors. This year's regatta is also a country qualifying event for the 2019 Pan American Games
The Lake Bluff Yacht Club is a community-based, family friendly, sailing, kayaking and social club based in Lake Bluff, IL. Over 140 families from Lake Bluff and surrounding communities belong to the club. The club hosts weekly summer and fall sailing races as well as family oriented social events each year.
