Day 5 Report (from Martin & Axel Johanssen)
After BIG day four, the fleet were again ready to race again after the regatta dinner, some overnight repairs and treatment of bruised and tired limbs. Weymouth course with a shifty NW-W wind and plenty of wind holes. After several start attempts the fleet finally started under black flag. The first upwind saw shifty conditions and the first downwind saw the left side of the course favoured together with a big increase in wind speed and the race to gain positions for final results was on.
The second race had even more gusty shifts and some boats (even World Champions!) capsized as the gusts tacked their boats. The four first boats were also the worthy top four in the final rankings.
The race to the dock then started, no pressure on the crews - just big fun.
Then preparing for the journeys back home, saying bye, or better "au revoir", see you again to old and new friends, and the prize giving to well deserved winners.
But in the end we are all winners as we enjoy sailing and we have had a lot of fun on and off the water.
Our conclusions from Worlds are:
- 13 races
- Great sailing area
- Great organization from WPNSA and RS Association
- New (and younger) crews as well as the return of old crews (hope it is not temporary)
- More speeding relatively pointing (let's see if we get some feedback regarding trim from Steve C)
- The field is much tighter then a few years back
- More crews make top results in races
- Great RS500 sailors
What a fabulous event! Well done WPNSA - outstanding! I hope you all had good journeys home. Many thanks to all the lovely words and gifts, I really appreciate it - you are definitely my favourite fleet!
Congratulations to Pim & Lisa van Vugt (NED), who took the title of World Champions after a hard-won battle in challenging and varied conditions. And to Steve & Sarah Cockerill for running up, and taking the UK National Champions title.
Giulia Rossi & Adriana Campanella, (ITA), in 22nd place overall, took the 1st Lady Team prize, Anneke Kikkert (NED, 18th overall) 1st lady helm, and Nico & Thomas Honor (FRA, 3rd) the 1st Family prize. Russian team Vladislav Ivanovsky & Alexey Fareny (10th) and Americans Matthew & Rachel Goetting (12th) won the most travelled prizes, whilst the Endeavour Prize of a brand new spinnaker (sponsored by Hyde Sails) was won by Florine & Enno de Haan (NED) in 39th place.
I know you loved the Sportography photos; these will all be available to view and buy by the end of this week. There will also be edited video available in the near future.
