Sydney 2000 - Olympic Sailing Day Twelve

by Editor 28 Sep 2000 08:18 BST

So Close !

Team GB's 470 representatives Nick Rogers and Joe Glanfield were 4 points behind the Argentinian Men's 470 team before todays race. They finished 3 places above them so have missed the Bronze medal by 1 point.

Nigel Cherrie's Team GB Report:

ROGERS AND GLANFIELD FOURTH

Team GB's 470 men's representatives, Nick Rogers and Joe Glanfield, were denied the Bronze medal after a last race showdown with the Argentinean crew of Javier Conte and Juan de la Fuente today which ended in favour of the South American crew by one mere point.

"If you set yourself a goal you have to achieve it, it's just like a businessman. We didn't achieve it and that's why we feel gutted. It feels like we have come last," commented Rogers. "It's pretty hard to take. We've been doing this for three years and had our sights set on a medal," added Nick.

Rogers and Glanfield led the Argentinean crew throughout most of the final race (series race 11) and more importantly ensured at least four other nations were between them but the Argentinean's overhauled the Mexican crew of Santiago Herandez and Manuel Villarreal on the final downwind leg to take tenth place with Rogers and Glanfield crossing the line seventh, giving Argentina the Bronze medal by just one point.

"At one point in the race we had five boats between us. The problem during a last race at a regatta is that for some boats it doesn't mean anything, it doesn't effect their overall position. They are not hungry like us and not hunting like we were so its easier for a crew which is in the medal hunt to come up through the fleet. We tried our best to catch the Greeks ahead of us but it wasn't going to happen," explained Glanfield.

Although the five remaining sailing members of Team GB didn't 'sow' up any medals today, they have all retained their positions in the medal zone in each of their classes. As Star crewman Mark Covell commented this evening, each sailor in the final few races "will just take each race as it comes".
