420 Class training at Helensburgh Sailing Club

by Dougie Bell 4 Mar 2019 07:24 GMT 2-3 March 2019

A weekend of 420 training took place at Helensburgh Sailing Club on 2/3 March 2019 to nicely round off a series of Winter training Academies, organised by RYA Scotland.

For this event, organised by the 420 Class Association, coach Callum MacDonald took charge of the four boats and managed an impressive amount of time on the water across both days. Threats of Storm Freya didnt deter the 8 sailors and they all enjoyed the breezy conditions which helped consolidate their experiences at previous training events. The Helensburgh Sailing Club kitchen was in full swing to support RYAS Optimist Academy and provided the usual excellent service for sailors and their support crews. Most of these young sailors are hoping to transition fully into the 420 this Summer and are looking forward to testing their skills at racing events in Scotland and beyond, starting with the RYA Scotland Spring Championships at Loch Tummel Sailing Club later this month.

The RYA Scotland Spring Championships at the end of March is open to any 420 and coaching will be provided by Neil Marsden.

Huge thanks to Callum MacDonald for coaching this weekend, Helensburgh Sailing Club for hosting, Lomond School (Helensburgh) for the loan of a RIB and RYA Scotland for continued support of 420 sailing north of the border this season.
