Medal for Britain at the ISAF World Sailing Games

by Myrrh Walker, RYA 22 May 2006 16:34 BST 10-20 May 2006

The ISAF World Sailing Games drew to a close on Saturday (20 May), with Laser European Champion Paul Goodison the closest British fleet racer to the podium, with a fourth place in the men's single-handed class.

The 28-year-old from Rotherham finished the event on a high note, crossing the finish line first in the final day's double point-scoring medal race; however, after some double figures scores from earlier in the week it was not enough to boost him into the podium places. Goodison finished in fourth, just one point behind Argentinean bronze medallist Diego Romero.

There was British success, however, in the team racing event (contested in 420s) where GBR3 took silver to spoil the American dominance, with USA boats finished in first, third and fourth.

Although not a priority event for the Skandia Team GBR squad, with the Olympic classes hosting their own World Championships, the ISAF World Sailing Games (10-20 May at Lake Neusiedl, Austria) did see some big names from the world of Olympic classes sailing take to the water, including Spanish 49er World Champions Iker Martinez-Xabier Fernandez and Australian cat stars Darren Bundock-Glenn Ashley, racing in the Hobie Tiger for this Austrian event.

Paul Goodison, Laser Radial sailors Lizzie Vickers and Laura Baldwin, and Tornado campaigners Andy Walsh and Ed Barney were amongst the British fleet racing contingent in Austria. The Radial girls and 470 development squad sailors Luke Patience and Chris Grube took the opportunity to fine-tune their skills before their respective European Championships in Riccione, Italy (Radial) and Balaton in Hungary (470s) in early June.

American World Champion Paige Railey took the crown in the Laser Radial class, with Vickers finishing in 11th and Baldwin in 14th. Teammates Penny Clark and Andrea Brewster were 20th and 26th, while in the 470 class, two bullets for the Scots-Welsh combination of Patience-Grube was not enough to see them into the medal race positions. They finished the week in 11th.

Tornado Olympic campaigners Andy Walsh and Ed Barney finished in ninth place overall, after a promising early start in the Hobie Tiger men's multihull class, with young transitional squad sailors Chris Rashley and Marcus Lynch in 12th.

In the women's Hobie 16 multihull class, youth sailors Hannah Rowles and Stephanie Wall from Weymouth, finished the week in 11th place overall.
