Melges MC Scow Spring racing report

by Hannah Noll 29 May 2019 23:56 BST

The Melges MC Scow is quietly one of the largest one-design fleets in North America. The class is a welcoming group of people focused on fun and learning, and the boat is simple, stable, and fast!

There are many opportunities locally, regionally or nationally to sail your MC all year long. Sail in your local fleet regularly. Travel to events to meet new people and gain racing experience against larger fleets.

Each year the racing calendar of MC sailing is jam-packed! In the winter, the MC fleet calls Lake Eustis, Florida its home. Leave your boat in Florida over the winter and race in weekly Lake Eustis Sailing Club races as well as the Triple Crown Series of three regattas including the MC Midwinter Championship, one of the class's largest regattas each year.

The National Championship is always held at a different location around the country. This year, the 49th annual championship will be hosted by Minnetonka Yacht Club on Lighthouse Island in Minnesota. Next year, the 50th Annual National Championship will be held on Lake Geneva 2020. Most recently in the past it has also been held in Texas, Michigan, South Carolina, Iowa, and more. The MC is a widespread fleet over 100 local fleets all across North America!

In addition to the mainstays of the Triple Crown racing series and the National Championship, the MC Sailing Association also sanctions the Master's Nationals (this year to be held in Keuka, New York) for skippers 50+ years old, the Youth Championship for sailors under 25 (at Cedar Lake, Wisconsin this year), the Blue Chip Regatta by qualification only, and the Team Championship for team racing. Be sure also to review the championships hosted by Western Michigan Yachting Association and the Inland Lakes Yachting Association .

The MC has its roots in family sailing. Local yacht club racing and casual family sailing are rock-solid essential factors to the MC's sustained success. An original design by the Melges family in 1956, the boat is fun both single-handed and double-handed From the very beginning, it was designed to be simple to sail alone yet comfortable to bring a family member on board. It's the perfect boat to pass the love of the sport on to the next generation!
The Melges Team is proud to attend the CEDAR LAKE SPRING REGATTA each year, supporting sailors with service, spare parts, and new sail delivery.

Melges also supported the event with drone footage and photos. At the Saturday evening banquet, MC and C Scow sailors huddled around the bar to watch and discuss the 40 minute drone video of the day's racing. You could hear the chatter and the laughs from a mile away! Everyone learned something from reviewing the day's sailing on screen. Watch the footage at the link below.

Be ready to put your best face forward! Start your regattas with confidence in your equipment so you can focus on your own improvement on the water. Avoid breakdowns by properly preparing for racing with all of the right gear. Certain parts need to be replaced every few years; feel free to call us here in Zenda, Wisconsin with any questions. Better yet, let us help you out while at a regatta! The Melges Team is happy to help you improve your performance.
