28 July - 4 August 2019
Day one say GBR in the top 5 whilst competitive fleets made consistency hard to come by.
Tuesday was the start of the 2019 Cadet World Championships proper with the 130 teams from 13 nations split evenly between the Championship fleet and Promotional fleet. A total of three races were run out of a scheduled twelve.
The Championship fleet again demonstrated the intensive competitiveness of the international Cadet with 7 different countries represented in the top 10 at the end of the day. From the GBR World Team Ethan Davey and Alex Enkel had a super day with an overall placing of 5th after the 3 races. Other GBR teams had less consistent results with the highlights being podium finishes from Lia Fletcher/Kali Karaskas in race 1 and Katie Yelland/Dom Rowell in race 2.
The day had dawned in an inauspicious fashion with sea mists, but these quickly blew away with a strengthening wind. Race 1 got under way first time under black flag with a heavy pin end bias, both of which caught a few boats out. The windward mark placings were a little sparse for GBR, with the team packing out the mid to low teens. Out the bunch Lia and Kali made the most ground throughout the race finishing in an excellent 3rd position with the rest of the GBR team broadly holding position.
By the second race the wind had continued to strengthen towards 20 knots with gusts causing some spills. At the windward mark Katie and Dom were showing strongly in 4th place and during the downwind showed great speed to eventually finish 3rd. Team of the race were Ethan and Alex who had to do turns on the start line and set of last; only to storm through to 10th at the windward and then 5th at the finish.
In the third race the wind had built to consistently over 20 knots testing all the teams with a steep chop in the shallow water. Again Ethan and Alex showed great speed to convert a 17th at the windward to 5th at the finish, leaving them as the most consistent and highest placed British team with the next highest placed being Lia and Kali in 12th.

In the Promotional Fleet, Team GBR got off to a cracking start in Race 1 with the Waldringfield trio of Daisy Nunn/Oscar Bush, Toby Bush/Kemmel Thorogood & Libbie Bush/Amelia Mayhew crossing the finish in 1-2-3, only to find that the latter two had both been black flagged at the start. In Race 2 & 3 the Polish sailors Piotr Cendrowski/Adam Rutkowski and Aussies MilliMacDonald/Emma Suda revelled in the breezy conditions and dominated the racing with a 1-2 each. Daisy & Oscar recovered well from a capsize in Race 2 to score 1-15-5 to be 4th overall after Day 1. Olivia Gowland/Hettie Thorogood had a good day in the office with a consistent 5-8-9 score. 20+ knots conditions with big waves made for challenging conditions with many capsizes amongst the tail enders (and a few for the more experienced sailors too!) but there were some awesome downwind legs to be enjoyed. The forecast for the rest of the regatta looks to have a bit less wind and more sunshine - bring it on!
