24-25 August 2019
The final day of Largs Regatta Festival 2019 is the ever popular Round Cumbraes Race where all classes sail around the Cumbrae Islands.
This year's race was extremely challenging due to the very light fickle winds however it did allow the 55 keelboats and 40 dinghies to share the same race course and slowly complete one lap of Great Cumbrae.
The faster lighter boats managed to short tack their way up the island shore to round the north end of the island and pull ahead of their rivals. However as they rounded the south end of the island and closed the Ayrshire shore the wind died away completely causing the majority of the fleet to park up, allowing the slower boats to make up time against their handicaps.
Again the Cumbrae shore was the place to be to catch what little air there was and so fortunes and positions changed dramatically on corrected time. The one consolation to the light conditions was the soaring temperatures reaching the hottest day of the year at 28C!
Prizes were awarded by Greg Pitt from on site Saturn Sails to winners of the Round Cumbraes Race as well as overall winners of the Regatta Festival.
Yacht of the Weekend was awarded to Old School (G Galbraith) dominating Class CYCA 4 with Alastair McLaughlin taking the Dinghy of the Weekend Trophy as well as the overall best performance prize.
