International 14 Prince of Wales Cup Week at Royal Cornwall Yacht Club - Day 2

26-30 August 2019
After day one was postponed, the boat yard was full of eager 14ers ready to get on the water with all the possible boat work and all possible go faster modifications done. As it turns out there is only so much boat work you can do.
Race 1
After an hour postponed on shore the fleet were off and out into the bay, with a very unstable breeze the race team could not set a course. At 3pm the race team moved into Carrick Roads to make the most of the 5 knots in the mouth of the river.
The first start was postponed after the majority of fleet decided that the port flyer at the pin was the only way to go. The race team repositioned and the second start got off clean with the whole fleet staying close together and all fighting for clean air and avoid the holes in the breeze. With lots of close battles up and down the fleet the finishes were extremely close and the whole fleet finished within minutes of the leaders. Neil and Ed claimed the victory followed by Douglas and Mark with first time Pow entrants Jack and Chris showing that some local knowledge and a full time 49er campaign puts you in the mix.
Race 2
After the break from racing to allow a cruise ship to leave the river giving everyone a breather, race 2 got off in a dying breeze that was becoming more unstable. The major of the fleet where heading to the Falmouth shore and staying out of the tide. some but it was all about keeping the boat going and avoid your buddy for the converted buddy prizes. Neil and Ed pulled out another victory but the rest of the pack were very shuffled with George and Jack showing amazing light air pace in second and Fitz and Rich in third. Tristan and Tom in "Fawkes" showed that an older Morrison 12 is still competitive with a 5th place.
With a good forecast for the PoW race tomorrow it is all to play for. Neil and Ed have to be pre race favourites but with Fitz and Rich in the brand new B6 close behind. Time will tell who will have bragging rights.
