The Derwent Reservoir Sailing Club Topaz fleet held its Open Event on Saturday 24th June. Seven boats competed in a wind that started light and shifty but by the second and third race had strengthened to a force 3 to 4. Tony Lee and Roger Errington of the Derwent Flying Fifteen fleet were the excellent OODs.
The first race was a bit of a procession, with Geoff Needham winning by a fair margin. The wind then picked up and the second race was much harder fought. Needham crossed the finish line a whisker ahead of Richard Startup with David Grundy a short distance behind. Some of the junior sailors were beginning to feel overpowered by the Uno Race rigs that were being used by all boats. Joric Gebhard, a junior sailor in a borrowed boat, distinguished himself by capsizing four times in the first 2 races and still did not finish last.
In the third and final race, Joric Gebhard, showed he was a champion in the making, avoiding further capsizes and storming through in second place, a whisker behind Richard Startup.
