3rd Annual Vintage Gold Cup Regatta on Gull Lake, Michigan - Day 2

by Vintage Gold Cup 5 Oct 2019 00:09 BST 3-5 October 2019

A long second day of racing awaited the 26 teams competing in the third annual Vintage Gold Cup. Four races were scheduled to make up for the two missed yesterday.

Steady wind blew at 6-8 knots all day over Gull Lake in Richland, Michigan. The day started out with bright sunshine and then turned cloudy and cool, but the fleet was very eager to sail and the best teams shone from the first tacks.

Eivind Melleby (NOR) with Joshua Revkin (USA) and Arthur Anosov with Dave Caesar (USA) got two bullets each today. The Norwegian won the first two races and Asonov the last two, they are now respectively in first and third place overall. In between them sits, in second overall, Lars Grael (BRA), sailing with Arnis Baltins (USA). They are having a brilliant series with two seconds, a fifth and a fourth today combined with yesterday's win to leave them only three points behind the leader. It is still early to make any forecast as three races are scheduled for tomorrow and the top teams are close on points: at the third Vintage Gold Cup anything could still happen.

"It was great fun!" said Arthur Anosov at the end of the day. "It seems like we've finally learned how to sail! We love these old boats. They have so many stories to tell. Jon VanderMolen brought us one of the first restored wooden boats and we were hooked forever. My crew Dave has actually helped to restore a few of them and he really knows about wooden boats and for him this event is very important. Tomorrow's plan is to get back on the water and sail another three good races."

The evening kicks off with the Legacy Night presented by MAP Strategic at the Gull Lake Yacht Club. During cocktail hour, everyone will be able to see the fleet ashore and cast his or her votes for the most beautiful boat.

The first warning signal will be at 10am tomorrow for the 26 teams representing seven nations, and after races we'll have the 2019 Vintage Gold Cup winners.
