2019 NSW O'pen Skiff Champs & The Dolphin Chaser - Good times on Lake Macquarie

Last weekend Mannering Park Amateur Sailing Club located on the Western shores of Lake Macquarie, hosted the 2019 NSW O'pen Skiff Champs in conjunction with their legendary Dolphin Chaser, now in its 5th year.
With 57 boats entered across three Fleets it was a super turnout for the growing O'pen Skiff class.
Mannering Park always attracts a crowd for the O'pen Skiffs, it's a grassroots club with members that make all the visitors feel incredibly welcome. Combined with camping or cabin accommodation located right next to the club and only a 1.5hr drive from Sydney it makes for a super easy weekend on the lake, that attracted sailors from as far afield as North QLD and Torquay, VIC.
Saturday kicked off with a light South Easterly and it was straight into point score racing for the NSW O'pen Skiff Champs, with 3 races in the morning followed by another 2 in the afternoon.
With 5 races in the bag for the Saturday, this allowed the weekend's name sake to take place, the Dolphin Chaser! In this "race" sailors are teamed 2-up, essential the top sailors are matched with the newbies, each team is given a number that corresponds to a numbered 15inch long inflatable dolphin. The race starts on the shore and the dolphins are released 500m to windward. The first team to find their dolphin and return to the beach is the winner of the Dolphin Chaser! A super fun event, a favourite of many of the younger kids who get to sail with the older kids.
Sunday afternoon and we managed another 3 races to round out a wonderful weekend of sailing, camping, eating and hanging out with friends. A big thanks goes out to MPASC and all its volunteers, Vaikobi for providing great prizes, and our volunteer umpires Damien Boldyrew Dante Olivieri for giving us their time over the weekend.
