Scottish Topper Champs at Tarbert Loch Fyne Yacht Club

by Bill Young 15 Jul 2006 15:06 BST 8-9 July 2006

Loch Fyne welcomed Scottish Toppers for their 2006 Area Championships and despite some top sailors missing the event to make their way to the Topper Worlds the turnout of 30 boats was still impressive.

The weather was kind and the F3-4 winds on Saturday for the first race saw Rona Young, Tarbert Loch Fyne YC making her intention of winning back to back home events clear with an impressive win.

After a course alteration for race two that kept the Rae Officer in his toes, Stephanie Lawrence, East Lothian YC continued her current form winning from Moray Clark RNCYC. In the Development Fleet Johnny Paterson Largo Bay SC kept Angus Gray Stephens at bay in the first race, with William Minshall TLFYC taking the second.

The third race of the day was abandoned as the wind dropped.

Saturday evening saw the ‘famous’ Tarbert Loch Fyne Yacht Club barbecue feeding the mixed Laser and Topper fleets inside the ‘functional’ clubhouse.

Sunday started with not much hope of sailing due to light/non existent winds, but as the fleet made their way out to the course, the wind came away with a F2 allowing racing. In the Main Fleet Stephanie Lawrence took this as her cue to record three bullets, with Crawford Paris, Strathclyde Loch SC, Emma Wilkie, Largs SC and Robin Jarvis, Largs SC picking up respective second places.

Overall Stephanie Lawrence gave an impressive display of consistent sailing to take the Scottish Area Championship for 2006, followed by Emma Wilkie Second and Rona Young third. In the Development Fleet, Angus Gray-Stephens was first, Johnny Paterson second and William Minshall third.
