A windy weekend for the Bembridge Illusions

by Mike Samuelson 23 Feb 2020 20:53 GMT 22-23 February 2020

Another very windy weekend which saw no formal racing for Vernon's Trophy even for the hardy Illusionists. Although annoyingly the strong winds abated on both days as the day wore on, the tides ruled out postponing until the afternoon.

After a half hour postponement on Saturday morning to see whether the F6 SW'erly might go down a bit earlier than forecast, it was decided that it was just too windy for formal racing to go ahead. However, five hardy souls decided that they wanted to at least go out for a sail.

With two safety boats on the water keeping on eye on them, they actually had great fun and proved that once they had made it up the harbour to the protection of Embankment Road, conditions were actually not that bad. Indeed although Ed Peel had returned back to the Club, the other four (Mark & Jo Downer, Rory Morrison & Monty Irwin) had two fun, non-scoring races with the finish of the second at the entrance to the Illusion Quay. Mark was the only one to risk a spinnaker; mind you goose winging was just as fast and less risky! Well done to Jo who won both races. Vernon would have been impressed!

Some classic spinnaker control by Mark Downer in F6/F7 conditions:

Conditions mid-harbour on Sunday morning were even rougher than the previous day, so the decision to cancel racing was not a difficult one to make!

Vernon's Trophy will be re-scheduled to one of the two 'normal racing' weekend's left before the end of the season.

Almost perfect condition on Sunday in the harbour Having had this season's first team racing event programmed in early December 2024 cancelled because of the high wind forecast, all fingers were crossed that the second weekend of team racing in early February would not suffer the same fate. Bembridge Illusion Prince Philip Cup
18 boats in the middle of January is pretty good! After a couple of week's break, it was business as usual for the Bembridge Illusion fleet. The Cup at stake was the Prince Philip Cup that was first raced for in 2021 in memory of the late Duke of Edinburgh. Posted on 19 Jan
Bembridge Illusion Flying Dutchman
Four races held on Saturday as Sunday's forecast was horrible Although it was great to see him a month or so ago, sadly no sign of Rudi Jurg, our 'flying Dutchman', on the start line for this season's Flying Dutchman weekend. However there were sixteen other keen Illusionists who took to the water. Posted on 6 Jan
Bembridge Illusion Icebreaker 2024
It was great to see 19 boats eager to start racing After a relatively small fleet competing for the Christmas Cracker over the weekend, it was great to see 19 boats eager to start racing for the Icebreaker Trophy (the oldest Regatta in the Illusion programme dating back to 1982) on Monday. Bembridge Illusion Christmas Cracker 2024
An overcast, misty and fickle weekend on the Isle of Wight Despite the last Regatta drawing a large fleet on the Saturday, another early-ish start and a disappointing forecast predicting little or no wind for the first day of this year's Christmas Cracker resulted in only 12 boats readying themselves for racing. Bembridge Illusion Picnic Hamper
25 boats enjoy a challenging six races with the breeze flicking 20+ degrees at times Last weekend's Team Racing was scuppered by Storm Darragh, so it was great to see so many boats (25 on Saturday and on Sunday) out racing for this year's pre-Christmas Picnic Hamper. Posted on 16 Dec 2024
Bembridge Illusion Bill's Barrell 2024
A new Rule 10 introduced for the event The annual 'Bill's Barrell' weekend is always fun and this year was no exception. The special NoR updated by the organiser, Bill Daniels, included a new Rule 10 which required helms to race with the very minimum of 'shouting'. Posted on 2 Dec 2024
Bembridge Illusion Bailey Bowl
26 keen sailors racing off Silversands beach and in the harbour It was great to see 21 boats out on Saturday 16th November for the first day of the Bailey Bowl Regatta. Conditions were very light so the decision was taken to take the fleet outside the harbour the race course was set just off Silversands beach. Posted on 18 Nov 2024
Bembridge Illusion Guy Fawkes Trophy 2024
Great to see 24 boats racing in the harbour It was great to see 24 Illusions racing on Saturday for the Guy Fawkes Trophy; they made quite a sight as they jinked their way through the last few moored boats in the harbour. Posted on 4 Nov 2024
Bembridge Illusion Trafalgar Trophy
Four races held in warm bright sunshine With a number of regular Illusionists out in Barcelona supporting INEOS Britannia, the Great South run potentially making travel to/from the mainland difficult and a distinctly unpleasant forecast for Sunday, numbers only just made double figures.
