eSailing kicks off at Rudyard Lake Sailing Club

by Mark Jacot 5 Apr 2020 06:17 BST

Like all other clubs, Rudyard Lake Sailing Club has suspended "on the water" sailing. This week we held our first electronic regatta, hosted by our new Honorary Electronic Race Officer Michael Jacot.

Fifteen boats took to the "water" and thank to video conferencing, a lot of commentary and banter followed. Comments such as "you can't do that" and "where are you all?" and "how do we slow Henry down?" flowed across the electronic airwaves. We started off in some fairly safe boats - Stars - with no spinnakers.

Unsurprisingly Henry, who has the unique combination of youth (ability to play computer games) and being one of the best sailors in the club, walked away with three firsts and a second to win the regatta. An unexpected result was our Finn sailor Christian, who came third; let's see how he gets on next week in spinnaker boats.

We are working our way up to more advanced boats including the Nacra 17, and with a World Champion and Olympic helm in our club we are hoping that the Nacra week will be an event to remember. Next week we move up to spinnaker boats.
